If anyone reading this has been a regular reader of the blog you’ll know that I posted a blog sometime last year reviewing an at the time newly released single by the band Near Mrs So far the Nottingham based group have 2 singles ‘She Goes’ and ‘That Much I know’. Well, they have just released the 3rd single of their exciting music careers, ‘Catch of the Day’, which I will be giving my opinion on in today’s blog.
I got the chance to see the band a few months ago at the famous Portland Arms pub in Cambridge, where the band’s front man Ryan Webb hales from. Headliners of the show they had a few other local talents supporting them and together all 4 acts created a very enjoyable night for all. Near Mrs was superb to see live and I will be travelling up to Nottingham on Friday 28th February to see them again. After their electrifying performance, I got a chance to speak to Ryan and just like I knew he would be he was very nice to talk to and seems very focused on the bands future, very nice to hear.
A few months before that gig I went to see him do a solo acoustic gig at the Rose and Crown pub in Somersham, Cambridgeshire. I almost enjoyed that more than the full band, but nothing beats a full band show. Listening to them I can tell that they already have a decent catalogue of material in the pipeline so hopefully, over the next year, we will see a lot of new and exciting stuff being released. The band are stepping their game up big time with other reviewers already blogging about them (Got me some competition lol), the release of their merch coming soon and performing gigs left right and centre.
Anyway, on to their new single ‘Catch of the Day’, which did not disappoint. I’ll start by saying that in my opinion, having listened to all their stuff they have done so far this song towers above the rest. I gave a really positive review on ‘That Much I know’ but this new one is something else, it really is. The song starts with an awesome guitar solo which eventually collides with all the instruments of the band in one very indie sound. This is what I like to call ‘a festival-goers dream’ song, by that I mean the type of song that if it was to be played on a big stage with a huge crowd it would have every man, women and child on their feet moshing. The lyrics throughout the song are very strong and well thought of. The guitar tune in the background dips in and out of madness throughout the entire song giving it a very indie-rock vibe. The song for me is perfect! One part of the whole song that particularly impressed me was the drumming, really enjoyed it from the Near Mrs drummer Toby Wilson.
The song ends with an awesome guitar solo that I bet will be the highlight of their set in a few weeks, for young musicians still very new to music at this level they are already incredible. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re on the Community festival line up within a few years, if there was a vote, they certainly would have mine. It’s obvious the band are destined for greatness and I look forward to seeing them grow through the years. I hope you guys enjoyed this blog, please make sure to go and listen to Near Mrs as they will certainly be ‘A Catch of the Day’ for you (That’s two puns in two blogs…I need to stop lol). Make sure to share and like this blog as I would really appreciate the support. Peace.
