Holy moly last night was magical! The Amazons. At Brixton Academy. On a Friday night. Yes, please. I’ve been to some pretty good gigs during my time but this jumps to the top of the pile. I’ve seen Catfish, Two Door, the Kooks, Dead Kennedy’s and none of them compare to the electrifying display by the Amazons last night. It was the last gig of their tour and wow did they go out with a bang. I had work that day early morning but I had booked a half-day. I left work at noon and around 4 pm me, my good friend Rob, my dad and our other two friends Sam and Charlotte all set off towards London. Drinking on the train is always an enjoyable experience even if you do get the dodgiest of stares from other fellow commuters.
We arrived at St Pancras Station and made our way to Brixton after acquiring some more booze from the local offy. Finally, we had made it, to the home of music in Brixton. We got a few more drinks in and by that time it was nearing 9 pm so we made our way inside the venue and found a place to stand. The second song in was 'Mother' and I decided it’s time to get stuck in, I respectfully left the group and went straight for the pits at the front. Once I was in there that was it for the night. It was just constant moshing all night and was the most enjoyable musical experience of my life so far. Thankfully I’ve put some weight on so I had some more protection from the people all around me who were also moshing. The band were outstanding from start to finish, they had every single member of the audience rocking until the very end. The Amazons performed my favourite song of theirs ‘Ultraviolet’ which went down a storm, never seen a pit like it. The place was bouncing all night, people throwing themselves at each other hoping to be caught and then thrown in a different direction.
They went on to play some more incredible tunes ‘25’, ‘Dark Visions’ and ‘Georgia’ all that is from their latest album Future Dust which is one of my favourite albums. They did play a lot of stuff from their first album too which was good such as ‘Ultraviolet’, ‘Little Something’ and the outstanding ‘Junk Food Forever’ which was one of the highlights of the gig altogether. They did a rendition of the famous 'Helter Skelter' by the Beatles which was just nuts, the place went crazy for that. The frontman for the Amazons Matt Thomson was class all night, very much like Billie Joe Armstrong in the way he spoke to the audience and how he conducted himself on stage. He made us all aware that it was his birthday so in true fashion we all sung him a happy birthday. With the gig drawing to a close there was still one more song to play, the incredible and best song by the band ‘Black Magic’. They always say leave the best till last and the Amazons certainly did. One last pit of the night and by far the best of the night, I did take a couple of elbows to the face but always worth it.
The gig was fantastic and my favourite gig of the year. The venue was extraordinary and an amazing band to see at my first ever Brixton Academy gig. The gig had finished and I found myself on the tube once again heading for kings cross. As the tube stopped and the doors opened my dad in his infinite wisdom decided to stack it out of the door before quickly jumping back on. Don’t lean on train doors kids! I hope you enjoyed this blog, guys, sorry it’s all positive things and there’s no criticism but you simply can’t fault the Amazons. Make sure to like, subscribe and drop a comment down below.
